Ray — Thanks for reading and for writing. Agree that loyalty has to be earned and tried to make that point in the article. My own experience as an employee and as a leadership coach/consultant over the years affirms for me that it is possible for management to create the conditions for people to want to be highly committed to what they do for a living and to earn commitment and trust. Until my involuntary “retirement” in April 2020, caused by the pandemic I worked for 46 straight years in different industries and sectors and had about 25 direct bosses in my career. I can count on one hand the number of them that truly did not have my interests in mind and who did not provide me a desired level (for me) of autonomy and support. And as a boss myself over the years I tried to create those same conditions for those for whom I was responsible for. Interestingly the organization I worked for with the least effective bosses and lowest level of trust was in the public sector — big city government. It’s hard work as a leader to empower and delegate and support and develop others. Unfortunately some managers don’t know how to do those things or they don’t think they are important, or they work for an organization that does not value those things. That leads to employees saying “I’m out of here.”
